Malaysian Academy of SME & Entrepreneurship Development (MASMED), previously known as Malaysian Entrepreneurship Development Centre (MEDEC), was established in 1975 to manage education plan, research and entrepreneurship consultation services. On 3rd March 2010, the Board of Executive has approved the establishment of UiTM Entrepreneurship Institution. The following month, on 1st April 2010, it has been decided that MEDEC, ERSC and Tunas Mekar will be combined and placed under Entrepreneurship Institution in which later named as MASMED.

UiTM is a university with high capacity of students consisting of 13 autonomous state campuses and 21 satellite campuses, which totalled to 35 campuses. With 17,488 academic staff and more than 170,000 students in one time, UiTM promises massive marketing segment and turns out to be the source of income generation to the marketing stakeholders. Thus, UiTM is highly potential to convert into stakeholders in the online business sector. If this project is approved, UiTM may become the first university with its own market place.

With the aim to empowering entrepreneurship at the university level, a programme named UiTM Unicorn Scholar Programme (UiTM USP) will be implemented. This programme targets the group of students with an outstanding academic performance, excellent leadership and highly enthusiastic in entrepreneurial activities. This programme is expected to change the landscape of entrepreneurship empowerment throughout the UiTM system including the aspects of cultural entrepreneurship, creating job opportunities, and students’ readiness to compete in today’s challenging global market.
